Tower XI, known as the Tower of Mercury, is one of the best-preserved and most monumental structures in Pompeii’s city walls. It stands in the northern part of the city, at the end of Via di Mercurio, between Tower X and Tower XII, on the edge of Regio VI. Its elevated position allowed defenders to watch over a broad stretch of the surrounding territory. Even today, the upper part of the tower offers extensive views across the ancient city, Vesuvius and the surrounding plain.
The tower belongs to the group of twelve towers built in opus incertum that were added to Pompeii’s fortifications in the early 1st century BC, during a major strengthening of the defences shortly before the Social War. These works were put to the test in 89 BC, when Pompeii, fighting against Rome, was besieged by the troops of Lucius Cornelius Sulla.
Tower XI was designed as a fully developed military structure arranged over three levels. The entrance on the city side led to a system of stairs providing access both to the lower floor and to the upper levels. The lowest chamber was a large room covered by a barrel vault, while a corridor led to a small postern gate opening outside the fortifications.
The intermediate level provided access to the wall walk running along the defences. From here, the defenders could move quickly along the circuit and reach the neighbouring towers, while another staircase led to the upper level. Numerous loopholes, still identifiable in the masonry, allowed them to observe and control the ground outside while remaining protected within the structure.
The layout of Tower XI is closely related to that of Towers X and XII, with which it forms a coherent architectural group in the northern sector of the fortifications. The combination of vaulted rooms, internal stairs, postern gates and connections to the wall walk shows the complexity of Pompeii’s defensive system on the eve of its confrontation with Rome.
The structure nevertheless underwent major alterations in antiquity. The postern gate and the staircase leading to the lower chamber were blocked up, probably when the tower had already lost much of its military function. The precise date of this closure cannot be established, but comparable changes also occurred in other towers along the circuit, such as Tower VIII.
Following the Roman conquest and the foundation of the colony in 80 BC, the fortifications gradually lost the strategic importance they had held during the Samnite period. The walls continued to define the city’s boundaries and the towers remained a feature of its monumental skyline, but several defensive passages were closed or altered, and some structures acquired new functions.
The importance of the Tower of Mercury extends well beyond the visible structure. Excavations in the surrounding area have made it possible to reconstruct a fundamental part of the history of Pompeii’s walls, showing that the defensive system was built and modified through numerous phases over several centuries.
In front of the tower, archaeologists identified remains of one of the city’s earliest fortifications, built with blocks of pappamonte and dating to the first quarter of the 6th century BC. A second circuit, constructed from limestone blocks, probably belongs to the first half of the 5th century BC. These discoveries show that Pompeii’s northern edge was already fortified many centuries before Tower XI was built.
Research to the west of the Tower of Mercury has also established that the two curtain walls built in opus quadratum, with the walkway between them, belong to a single major construction project dating to the first half of the 4th century BC. The system consisted of two parallel walls connected to an internal earthwork and represented one of the most substantial phases of the Samnite fortifications.
Of particular importance are the different walking surfaces discovered along this sector of the walls. Archaeologists have identified at least four, laid one above another over time. One of them, dating to the early 1st century BC, preserves deep ruts left by carts, interpreted as traces of the transport of war machines along the fortifications in the period immediately before Sulla’s siege.
These traces provide exceptional evidence of the city’s military organisation. They demonstrate more than the mere existence of the fortifications: they record the actual movement of men, carts and equipment along the walls during one of the most dramatic moments in Pompeii’s history.
The investigations also identified a pomerium road, a street running along the inner edge of the fortifications. First established in the Archaic period, it remained in use through numerous alterations until the eruption of AD 79, demonstrating the remarkable continuity of the urban layout in this sector.
Various quarry and working marks are also visible on the large stones of the city walls, carved by the teams of stonemasons who prepared and laid the blocks. Asterisks, triangles and other geometric symbols have been interpreted as marks used by different groups of craftsmen, although their precise meaning remains under study.
The first modern investigations of the northern stretch of the fortifications date to 1811, when attempts were made to clear the outer face of the walls. Between 1927 and 1929, Amedeo Maiuri opened new trial trenches in the area of the Tower of Mercury to study the earliest phases of the circuit. Some of these excavations were subsequently reopened and investigated further using modern archaeological methods.
In 2017, the Archaeological Park of Pompeii launched a new research campaign at Tower XI. This refined the chronology of the different wall circuits and documented the road surfaces, Archaic structures and traces associated with the phase immediately preceding Sulla’s siege.
The tower visible today also reflects substantial modern restoration. Parts had already been rebuilt in the 20th century to consolidate the structure and provide access to its upper levels. A later project by the Park covered the entire stretch between Tower XI and Tower X, with work on the masonry, stone and tuff surfaces, and visitor routes.
The recent work also restored the upper wall walk and access to the top of the Tower of Mercury. Today, the tower is one of the highest viewpoints in the archaeological area. It offers a direct understanding of Pompeii’s strategic position on a plateau overlooking the Sarno Valley and the territory between Vesuvius and the sea.
Tower XI – the Tower of Mercury and the city walls is therefore one of the most important places for understanding the history of Pompeii’s fortifications. The tower preserves the layout of the major military phase of the early 1st century BC, while the surrounding excavations have revealed evidence of defences dating back as far as the 6th century BC. Within just a few metres, several centuries of change are documented, from Archaic and Samnite Pompeii through the Roman conquest to the city’s final years before the eruption of Vesuvius.
