The House of the Geometric Mosaics is one of the largest residences in Pompeii. It covers an area of about 3,000 square metres and contains more than sixty rooms arranged across terraces at different levels.
The house was formed by joining and progressively enlarging two earlier atrium houses. Its position on the southern slope allowed the rooms and terraces to overlook the Sarno valley.
Its name derives from the exceptionally rich floor decoration, consisting mainly of black-and-white mosaics with geometric patterns, including chequerboard and labyrinth designs.
Recent archaeological research has added a particularly interesting chapter to the building’s history: excavations published by the Park in 2026 identified evidence that the rooms were reoccupied after the eruption, with domestic and productive activities continuing into Late Antiquity.
