The Comitium occupies the south-eastern corner of the Forum in Pompeii, near the entrance to Via dell’Abbondanza. Built during the 2nd century BC, it formed part of the group of buildings used for the city’s political life.
Its function is traditionally associated with the election of civic magistrates. The many inscriptions and electoral notices found in the area confirm the intense political activity that characterised this part of Pompeii.
At a later stage, the Forum itself may have been used for some voting procedures, while the Comitium may have served for counting votes and proclaiming the elected magistrates. The precise organisation of elections in Pompeii remains a subject of study, however, so not every proposed function of the building should be regarded as definitively established.
Its location immediately beside the administrative buildings nevertheless highlights the area’s central role in the conduct of the city’s public affairs.
