The Antiquarium of Pompeii is the museum space beside Porta Marina. Through finds from the excavations, it provides an introduction to a visit to the ancient city.
The first museum collection was established in the 19th century and later expanded by Amedeo Maiuri. The building was severely damaged by bombing in 1943, then restored and reopened in 1948. It remained closed for many years after the 1980 earthquake and became accessible again in 2016.
The current permanent display opened on 25 January 2021. It traces Pompeii’s history from the Samnite period in the 4th century BC to the eruption of AD 79, with particular attention to the relationship between the city and Rome.
Alongside celebrated historic finds, the museum also displays material from the Park’s most recent excavations, connecting the history of the early explorations with contemporary archaeological research.
