The House of Girali stands in the northern part of Regio V, near the intersection of the Vicolo delle Nozze d’Argento and the continuation of the Vicolo di Cecilio Giocondo.
The building emerged during the major programme to stabilise and reprofile the excavation fronts in Regio V. This work brought to light new streets, domestic rooms, and decorations that had remained beneath the deposits from the eruption for centuries.
Richly painted rooms have been identified in the part of the house documented so far. Two rooms flanked a small entrance: the eastern room preserved decoration featuring Erotes, while the western room had a finely painted band of vegetal scrolls, the motif from which the domus takes its modern name.
The investigations show that this part of the city was still undergoing building and decorative work in the final years of Pompeii’s existence. The discovery of the house is also important because it helped reconstruct the street network in the northern part of Regio V, which had previously remained partly buried.
