Visiting Pompeii is much easier with a map. The archaeological site covers a very large area, with ancient streets, houses, temples, baths, theatres, gardens and public buildings spread across approximately 66 hectares.
Before entering the site, it is useful to identify the monuments you most want to see and choose a route according to the time available.

The map is particularly useful once you are inside the archaeological site, as the ancient street network can be difficult to navigate without a clear plan.
Main entrances to Pompeii
There are three main entrances to the archaeological site:
Porta Marina – Via Villa dei Misteri
Piazza Esedra – Porta Marina Inferiore
Piazza Anfiteatro – Piazza Immacolata
Visitors arriving by Circumvesuviana at Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri will generally find Porta Marina or Piazza Esedra the most convenient entrances.
Visitors arriving through the modern centre of Pompeii can also use Piazza Anfiteatro.

How to use the map when visiting Pompeii
Pompeii is much larger than many first-time visitors expect. Trying to see every building during a single visit is rarely practical.
A better approach is to identify a selection of major monuments and connect them along a logical route.
Among the most important areas and buildings are the Forum, the Temple of Apollo, the Forum Baths, the House of the Faun, the House of the Vettii, the theatre district, the Amphitheatre and the Garden of the Fugitives.
Some houses and monuments may occasionally be closed because of conservation work, maintenance or operational requirements. Always check current information from the Archaeological Park before planning a route around a particular building.
Accessible route – Pompeii for All
The official map also identifies the accessible route and buildings that can be reached by visitors with reduced mobility.
The Archaeological Park's Pompeii for All project provides an accessible itinerary through a substantial part of the ancient city.
Because Pompeii retains its original Roman paving, changes in level and archaeological structures, some areas can still present difficulties for wheelchair users or visitors with limited mobility.
The accessible route and accessible buildings are clearly marked on the official Pompeii map (PDF).
