Visiting the crater of Mount Vesuvius
The visit follows Path No. 5 – Il Gran Cono, the official trail leading towards the crater of Mount Vesuvius.
The route begins at approximately 1,000 metres above sea level and climbs through a landscape of volcanic ash and lapilli.
As you approach the crater rim, several viewpoints offer impressive views inside the crater and across the Bay of Naples.
On clear days, the panorama extends towards Naples, the Sorrento Peninsula and Capri.
Is this a guided tour?
This ticket should not be confused with a private or traditional guided tour.
Access to the Gran Cono is organised by the Vesuvius National Park in groups accompanied by guides from the Vesuvius Volcano Permanent Base (PPVV) as part of the Park's safety and access system.
The Tiqets product itself offers different options, including a digital audio guide or guidebook.
If you prefer a complete excursion with transport and a dedicated guided experience, other Vesuvius tours are available from Naples and Pompeii.
How long does the visit take?
Tiqets indicates an approximate duration of 2 hours for this experience.
The Vesuvius National Park regulations allow up to approximately two hours for the standard round-trip route from the Quota 1000 entrance.
The route includes an uphill section on volcanic terrain, so actual walking time depends on your pace and the conditions on the day of your visit.
Mount Vesuvius opening hours
Access times to the Gran Cono change according to the season:
-
January, February, November and December: 9:00 am – 3:00 pm
-
March and October: 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
-
April, May, June and September: 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
-
July and August: 9:00 am – 6:00 pm
The visit must always be completed within the closing times established by the Vesuvius National Park.
Access can be suspended because of adverse weather conditions, safety alerts or other circumstances affecting the trail.
Timed admission
Access to the Gran Cono is regulated by timed entry.
Visitor numbers are limited for each time slot, so booking in advance is strongly recommended, especially during weekends and the busiest months of the year.
Always check the time shown on your ticket and arrive early enough to reach the entrance before your scheduled visit.
How to get to Mount Vesuvius
The standard ticket does not include transportation to the entrance of the Gran Cono.
From Herculaneum
You can reach Ercolano Scavi by Circumvesuviana train from Naples and continue towards Mount Vesuvius using a shuttle, taxi or other transport service.
There are also tickets that combine transportation from Herculaneum with admission to Mount Vesuvius.
See Mount Vesuvius tickets with round-trip transport from Herculaneum
From Naples
If you are staying in Naples, choosing a ticket that already includes round-trip transportation can be easier than organising the journey independently.
See Mount Vesuvius tickets with transport from Naples
From Pompeii
Mount Vesuvius can also be reached from Pompeii using local transport or organised excursions.
Tours departing from Pompeii are a convenient choice if you plan to visit the volcano before or after the archaeological site.
What to wear
The Gran Cono is a mountain trail, even though it is visited by thousands of tourists.
Wear comfortable walking or hiking shoes with good grip.
During summer, bring:
-
water;
-
sun protection;
-
a hat;
-
light clothing suitable for walking.
In cooler months, temperatures and wind conditions near the crater can be very different from those at sea level, so bring an extra layer.
Weather and possible closures
Access to Mount Vesuvius depends on weather and safety conditions.
The Vesuvius National Park can close the Gran Cono trail when conditions make the excursion unsafe, including severe weather alerts.
For this reason, it is advisable to check conditions before travelling to the volcano, especially during periods of unstable weather.
The Gran Cono trail is currently open following restoration work completed in July 2026.
