# Pompeii Plus: What Is Included and Which Villas Can You Visit?

Pompeii Plus is the ticket for visitors who want to explore not only the ancient city, but also Villa of the Mysteries, Villa of Diomedes and Villa Regina in Boscoreale with its Antiquarium.

This guide explains which areas are included, how much time you should allow, the transfers to consider and the main differences between Pompeii Plus and Pompeii Express.

Discover how to organise a more extensive visit to the Archaeological Park of Pompeii.

Pompeii Plus is designed for visitors who want to extend their visit beyond the main urban area of ancient Pompeii and explore several important suburban villas.

Pompeii Express covers the ancient city, while Pompeii Plus also includes Villa of the Mysteries, Villa of Diomedes and Villa Regina in Boscoreale with its Antiquarium.

It is therefore the more suitable option for visitors who have most of the day available and are interested in the large residences and agricultural estates built outside the city walls.

## What does Pompeii Plus include?

The official Pompeii Plus route currently includes:

- the ancient city of Pompeii;
- Villa of the Mysteries;
- Villa of Diomedes;
- Villa Regina in Boscoreale;
- the Antiquarium of Boscoreale;
- the park shuttle service, subject to its timetable and available places.

Individual villas, buildings or rooms may close temporarily because of restoration, maintenance, conservation or organisational requirements. Check the latest information before your visit.

### What is the difference between Pompeii Express and Pompeii Plus?

**Pompeii Express** includes admission to the main urban area of ancient Pompeii.

**Pompeii Plus** includes the ancient city and the suburban villas covered by the extended route.

Pompeii Express is generally sufficient for a first visit lasting a few hours. Pompeii Plus is more suitable when you can dedicate most of the day to the archaeological site and want to explore areas outside the central city.

## The suburban villas included in Pompeii Plus

### Villa of the Mysteries

Villa of the Mysteries is one of the best-known residences in the Pompeii area. It stands outside the ancient city walls, beyond Herculaneum Gate, and is particularly famous for the large fresco cycle preserved in one of its principal rooms.

The complex contains both residential spaces and areas connected with agricultural activities. Reaching the villa requires a longer walk than the shortest routes through the ancient city, but it is one of the most important sites included in Pompeii Plus.

Access to Villa of the Mysteries is through the internal Pompeii Plus route. It is not normally possible to enter the villa directly from the road.

### Villa of Diomedes

Villa of Diomedes is situated along the Street of the Tombs, not far from Villa of the Mysteries.

It is one of the largest suburban residences built outside Pompeii’s walls. The villa extends over several levels and contains residential rooms, open spaces, gardens and service areas.

Its layout helps visitors understand how wealthy Roman families organised their homes in the countryside immediately outside the city.

### Villa Regina and the Antiquarium of Boscoreale

Villa Regina is a Roman agricultural estate located in Boscoreale, separate from the main Pompeii archaeological area.

Unlike the large aristocratic residences, Villa Regina was primarily connected with farming and wine production. It provides valuable evidence about agriculture and the rural economy of the Vesuvian area.

The nearby Antiquarium of Boscoreale displays objects and archaeological evidence relating to the landscape, farming and everyday life around Mount Vesuvius before the eruption of AD 79.

Because Boscoreale is a separate location, you must allow time for the journey and check the return transport before beginning the visit.

## How to plan your Pompeii Plus visit

A Pompeii Plus itinerary requires more time and planning than a standard visit to the ancient city.

Allow at least three or four hours for the principal areas of Pompeii. Visitors who also want to see Villa of the Mysteries, Villa of Diomedes and Villa Regina should reserve most of the day.

The total duration depends on:

- the entrance you use;
- the route followed through the ancient city;
- which buildings are open;
- walking and transfer times;
- the shuttle timetable;
- the time spent at each villa.

Starting in the morning is strongly recommended.

### A possible Pompeii Plus itinerary

A practical route may be organised as follows:

1. enter the ancient city;
2. visit the principal streets and public buildings;
3. continue towards Herculaneum Gate;
4. visit Villa of Diomedes;
5. visit Villa of the Mysteries;
6. use the shuttle connection to reach Villa Regina and the Antiquarium in Boscoreale.

The best order may change according to your entrance, current opening hours and the available shuttle service.

Check the last admission time for the suburban-villas route before beginning. Access through Herculaneum Gate may close earlier than the main archaeological site.

### Pompeii Artebus

Pompeii Artebus connects Pompeii with Villa Regina and other sites managed by the Archaeological Park.

The service is currently free for park visitors, but places are limited. Timetables, stops and availability may change, and journey times can be affected by traffic.

Do not plan the entire day around the assumption that a particular departure will always be available. Check the current timetable before travelling and leave enough time for the return journey.

The official information currently states that the shuttle has luggage storage but is not equipped for passengers with disabilities. Visitors with specific mobility requirements should check accessible alternatives in advance.

### Can you leave Pompeii and enter again?

The ordinary Pompeii Plus ticket is valid for one admission. You cannot leave the Archaeological Park and later re-enter through another gate using the same ticket.

Plan the internal Pompeii route and the transfer to the villas carefully before heading towards an exit.

## Tickets and practical information

### Can the villas be added to Pompeii Express?

Visitors who already hold a Pompeii Express ticket can currently purchase an additional ticket for the suburban-villas route.

The supplement is sold at the beginning of the route near Herculaneum Gate and the Street of the Tombs. Payment is electronic only.

Prices and procedures may change. When you already know that you want to visit the villas, selecting Pompeii Plus during the original booking is usually the simplest option.

### Opening times and last admission

The suburban-villas route may stop admitting visitors earlier than the main Pompeii site.

The official timetable currently indicates the last entrance at Herculaneum Gate at:

- 15:30 during the winter timetable;
- 17:30 during the summer timetable.

Opening hours can change because of seasonal schedules, maintenance or exceptional closures. Check the current [**Pompeii opening hours**](https://www.pompeionline.net/en/pompeii-info/pompeii-opening-hours) shortly before your visit.

### What should you bring?

Wear comfortable shoes with stable soles. The itinerary includes ancient streets, uneven surfaces and longer walking distances than a short visit to the city.

During warmer months, bring drinking water, a hat and sun protection. Much of the route is outdoors.

Avoid suitcases and bulky backpacks. Bags larger than the limits established by the Archaeological Park are not permitted inside the sites.

Bring:

- your ticket or booking voucher;
- a valid identity document;
- a charged smartphone;
- any instructions received from the booking provider.

### How to choose and book the ticket

Pompeii Plus can be selected together with the other admission options on the Pompeii ticket page.

Compare Pompeii Express, Pompeii Plus and any available audio-guide option, then check availability for your chosen date.
