# Tower VII and the City Walls

**Tower VII** forms part of Pompeii’s defensive system and stands in the north-eastern sector of the city walls, along the stretch between **Sarno Gate and Nola Gate**. This part of the circuit was particularly important because the terrain offered less natural protection than the city’s steeper slopes, making it necessary to reinforce the defences with a greater concentration of towers.

The tower belonged to the group of **twelve towers built in opus incertum** during the final major strengthening of Pompeii’s walls in the early 1st century BC. The work was carried out shortly before the **siege of 89 BC**, when Pompeii, which had taken sides against Rome in the Social War, was attacked by the troops of Lucius Cornelius Sulla. Archaeological investigations have confirmed that the entire defensive system was extensively reorganised during this period.

Like the other towers of this phase, **Tower VII** originally had several levels. Pompeii’s towers generally comprised **three storeys supported by barrel vaults**, linked by internal staircases at the rear. Side doorways gave access to the wall walk, while a small postern opening outside the city could be located on the lowest level.

Tower VII preserves numerous features that still make this arrangement clear today. Parts of the **internal staircases**, remains of the vaulted coverings, corridors and several passages between different parts of the structure are visible. The survival of these elements makes the tower particularly useful for reconstructing how Pompeii’s fortifications operated before the Roman conquest.

The outward-facing wall has several **narrow defensive openings** through which the ground in front of the walls could be monitored. Their arrangement shows how the tower was designed to allow the defenders to observe the surrounding area while remaining protected inside the structure.

The relationship between Tower VII and the city’s streets is particularly interesting. Geophysical surveys in Regiones III and IX have identified the continuation of an ancient secondary street running east–west, parallel to Via dell’Abbondanza and Via di Nola, which appears to end at **Tower VII** itself. This finding suggests a close connection between the arrangement of the fortifications and the city’s internal street network.

Numerous **funerary inscriptions carved directly into the walls** have also been recorded along the stretch of the circuit near the tower. Dozens of cinerary urns were found in the same area, providing evidence of funerary use immediately outside the city. The inscriptions and burials formed part of the suburban landscape that developed along the fortifications and show how, as the walls gradually lost their military role, the surrounding spaces could also be used for other purposes.

Following Sulla’s conquest and the foundation of the Roman colony in **80 BC**, the fortifications gradually lost their strategic importance. The towers nevertheless continued to define the city’s monumental skyline, while some stretches of the walls were altered, incorporated into buildings or adapted to new urban needs.

Tower VII also suffered the effects of the events that affected Pompeii in the final decades of its history. The upper parts of the towers were damaged by the earthquakes of the 1st century AD and subsequently by the eruption of **AD 79**, while the lower structures and part of the internal layout have survived well enough to be understood archaeologically.

From Tower VII, the walls continue north-west towards **Nola Gate** and south-east to **Sarno Gate**. This stretch preserves sections belonging to different building phases, illustrating the long development of Pompeii’s defences from the Samnite age to the Roman period.

**Tower VII and the city walls** therefore provide some of the clearest surviving evidence of Pompeii’s fortifications. The internal staircases, vaults, corridors and defensive openings offer a tangible insight into the organisation of a military tower, while the nearby street and funerary evidence show how this sector continued to change even after the walls had lost their defensive function.
