#  House of the Mosaic Doves VIII.2.34

The **House of the Mosaic Doves**, in Regio VIII of Pompeii, is a large house originally built in the **Samnite period** and later enlarged by exploiting the city’s southern slope. It was arranged around a spacious atrium and also had an upper storey and rooms on a lower level.

The main floor preserves evidence of the house’s earliest decorative phases, including **First- and Second-Style floors** and remains of First-Style wall painting. The tablinum and several reception rooms stood on the southern side of the atrium, including dining rooms with refined mosaic floors.

The house takes its name from one of its most celebrated mosaics, an **emblema depicting doves beside a basin**. The complex also yielded another important figured mosaic showing a **lion fighting a leopard**. Both works attest to the high quality of the residence’s decoration; the emblemata were transferred to the National Archaeological Museum of Naples.

From the mid-**1st century BC**, the house was extended southwards into the area beside the city walls. New rooms were created on lower levels, together with a large panoramic terrace. This transformation links the House of the Mosaic Doves with the other great residences of the Insula Meridionalis, which used the natural difference in height to create houses arranged vertically.

The house was excavated in several campaigns beginning in **1767**, with further investigations in 1885 and 1928. Its long excavation history and decoration from different phases make it especially valuable for understanding the development of Pompeian domestic architecture.
