#  House of Marcus Fabius Rufus VII.16.20–22

The **House of Marcus Fabius Rufus** is one of the great panoramic residences of the Insula Occidentalis. The building was constructed to take advantage of Pompeii’s western slope and incorporated structures belonging to the ancient fortifications, which had by then lost their original military function.

The house has an exceptionally monumental arrangement extending over **four levels**. On the upper level is an atrium built in the Claudian period in place of an earlier room, while on the western side the residential spaces opened onto a large panoramic terrace overlooking the Gulf of Naples.

The layout combined the traditional organisation of the Pompeian domus with true terraced architecture. A garden peristyle and numerous living and reception rooms occupied the section facing the view, while the lower levels made direct use of the site’s steep natural gradient.

The decoration records several phases in the residence’s history. Late Republican floors survive alongside paintings in both the **Second and Fourth Pompeian Styles**, evidence of the many interventions carried out during the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD.

The house’s location is also important for understanding the city walls. Excavations in this area identified a small **Porta Occidentalis**, associated with the earliest phases of the fortifications and later incorporated into the development of the houses of the Insula Occidentalis.

Together with the neighbouring Houses of the Library, the Golden Bracelet and Maius Castricius, the House of Marcus Fabius Rufus is now included in the major project to restore and secure the entire western sector.
