#  House of the Thiasus IX-10, 3

The **House of the Thiasus** is one of the most important discoveries made at Pompeii in recent years. Located in Insula 10 of Regio IX, it has been investigated as part of the new excavations begun in 2023.

The domus was a large residence with sophisticated rooms for receiving guests. Excavations have revealed an extensive banqueting hall, colonnaded spaces and an elaborate private bath suite, demonstrating the exceptional standard of the areas used for the social life of Pompeii’s elite.

In 2025, an extraordinary **Second Style megalography with a Dionysian subject** was discovered across three walls of a large room opening onto the garden. The almost life-size figures belong to the ritual world of Dionysus and include members of the thiasus, the procession that accompanied the god. The house takes its modern name from this exceptional decoration.

The discovery is particularly important because large Dionysian painted cycles of this kind are extremely rare. The best-known comparison at Pompeii is, of course, the decoration of the Villa of the Mysteries, found more than a century earlier.

The residence also contained a large black hall decorated with scenes from the Trojan War. The paintings depict figures and episodes from Greek myth and formed part of a room used for banquets and for the owner’s social display.

The size of the house, the richness of its paintings, its baths and its convivial spaces indicate that the property belonged to a person of very high social standing. Research is still in progress, however, and the identity of the ancient owner should not be treated as certain.
