It is named after the large wall painting at the back of its garden, where Venus reclines on a shell accompanied by two Cupids. The painting belongs to an architectural setting in which the garden, its porticoes and the rooms around it became the principal focus of the residence. The house took shape through successive alterations rather than a single building campaign. The Park dates its construction to the **first century BC**, followed by substantial changes to the internal arrangement. Older structures and floors were retained alongside later decoration. This combination is characteristic of Pompeian houses, which often preserve the choices of several generations rather than a completely uniform design. The entrance passage leads to an **atrium**, the traditional distribution and reception space of a Roman house. Its central rainwater basin, or *impluvium*, was finished with decorative marble work. Small rooms open around the atrium, but the route through the building makes clear that the most expansive setting lay further inside. The traditional central reception room, the *tablinum*, lost its dominant role as the garden became more important. The **peristyle** linked the principal rooms to a colonnaded garden. Reception, dining and private rooms opened towards this green space, allowing architecture and planting to form a coherent setting for domestic life. A particularly large *oecus*, or reception hall, illustrates the scale on which the occupants could entertain. The smaller rooms around it provide a useful contrast between spaces for display and more intimate accommodation. The garden’s painted rear wall is arranged in distinct scenes. **Venus** occupies the central panel, reclining on a large shell above the sea. She wears a diadem and jewellery and is accompanied by Cupids. To one side is a painted statue of Mars carrying a spear and shield; to the other is a fountain visited by birds. Below, plants and animals appear beyond a painted barrier, extending the real garden into an imaginary landscape. Venus was Pompeii’s patron deity as well as a goddess associated with love and fertility. Her presence was therefore especially appropriate in a richly decorated domestic garden. The image should nevertheless be understood within a private residence: a divine subject in a wall painting does not by itself make the garden a public sanctuary. The relationship between **real and painted nature** is one of the house’s most distinctive qualities. Porticoes framed views across the planted area, while the wall painting appeared to continue that landscape beyond its physical boundary. Seen from the rooms around the garden, the composition created a carefully arranged setting for meals, conversation and reception. The celebrated Venus panel gains much of its meaning from this relationship to the surrounding architecture. The house retained a variety of floor finishes, including cement-based pavements with decorative inserts, mosaics and marble work. Such surfaces did not necessarily belong to the same phase as the surviving wall paintings. Looking at floors, thresholds and changes in the arrangement of rooms helps reveal a history of alteration that can be overlooked when attention is concentrated on the main fresco. The Park associates the house with a branch of the **Satrii**, a prominent family in the city’s final decades. This is a historical identification separate from the modern name derived from the Venus painting. It does not imply that the same family occupied every earlier building incorporated into the residence. The principal excavations took place in **1933–1935 and 1951–1953**. Exposure after excavation created new conservation needs for the painted plaster. The visible house includes the results of archaeological investigation, restoration and continuing maintenance, as well as ancient fabric. During a visit, follow the progression from the street and atrium to the garden, then consider the Venus painting together with the porticoes and reception rooms that frame it.
