#  House of the Floral Lararium II.9.4

The **House of the Floral Lararium** stands in Regio II beside the House of the Outdoor Triclinium. Its modern name comes from the decorated space used for household worship. The *lararium* formed part of domestic life, providing a setting for the veneration of the household’s protective deities rather than serving as a public temple.

The house developed through more than one building phase. Its rooms included an **atrium**, decorated domestic spaces and a garden with masonry couches for outdoor dining. These elements connect the house with the wider character of this district, where even relatively compact residential rooms could open onto an important green space.

Surviving decoration included painted walls and cement-based floors enriched with inserts. Such finishes help distinguish the main rooms and indicate the attention given to their appearance. The floral decoration associated with the lararium brought imagery from the natural world into the setting of household religion.

The **garden triclinium** provided a place to recline for meals outdoors. Read together with the shrine and the decorated rooms, it shows how dining, leisure and worship could occupy closely connected spaces within the same residence. These functions should not be separated into modern categories of purely practical, decorative or religious rooms.

The name identifies the building through one of its surviving features; it does not provide the name or biography of its ancient occupants. The house is most useful for understanding the scale and variety of everyday domestic space in the south-eastern part of Pompeii.
